Abstract

This study examines the similarities among “The Hokusai Pattern Collection(Hokusai Moyō Gafu)”;the reprint of “Book of New Patterns” (Shingata komon-cho)”authored by Katsushika Hokusai in 1824 ; and the pieced quilt patterns used in American quilts. These comparisons are undertaken from the perspective of geometric patterns, placement, and repetitions. The results indicate that “The Hokusai Pattern Collection” contains some patterns that are highly similar to the pieced quilt patterns, and the study suggests that some of these materials may be applicable as patchwork patterns for textile product designs.
