Abstract

In recent years, expectations for the use of street space have increased. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyze how open spaces are used and to gain knowledge that will contribute to the design of pedestrian paths in Japan. The survey method is a video survey. The location is a temporary rest area set up in the parking of Sakurai Station in Nara Prefecture. The type of planting and pavement are varied during the study. The results show that the installation of low plantings facilitated the use of street-side seating. Additionally, it is found the installation of the wood deck increase the utilization of seating in the area where it is installed and in the surrounding space.
