Abstract

The OECD(2020) advocates the capability to realize individual and collective wellbeing as a required educational goal in a complex and uncertain society. In Japan, this concept is mentioned in the Basic Plan for the Promotion of Education, and there is a need to provide lesson programs and tools that can be implemented in schools. In this study, we aim to develop a card game named “Super Happy Birthday” that enable children to foster their own “Wellbeing Competency”, and implement it in junior high school classes to empirically test its effectiveness. The results of a survey of students who participated in this learning program showed that it stimulated active participation and students acquired wellbeing competencies through improved understanding of the basic concepts of wellbeing and diversity, as well as awareness of their own and others’ wellbeing.
