Abstract

This study examines the state of sustainable fashion research and education in Japan, highlighting its fragmented development and strong focus on material and environmental aspects such as waste reduction. Based on curriculum analysis and faculty perspectives, it identifies key barriers including limited institutional support, narrow interpretations of sustainability, and a lack of interdisciplinary approaches. The study argues for expanding research through locally grounded practices and cultural perspectives, emphasizing the need to integrate diverse, context-specific approaches to foster more holistic and effective sustainability in fashion education.
