Abstract

This presentation examines the establishment of the National Uniform (Kokuminfuku) in 1940, focusing on Kazo Saito as a key participant in the process. As its formulation involved multiple actors, it is difficult to isolate Saito’s individual role. This study clarifies how his ideas on Japanese design, functionality, hygiene, standardisation and economy were reflected in Kokuminfuku by analysing his artistic ideas and clothing designs up to the 1930s, together with his text Kokuminfuku no Koan and the final designs.
