This study examines social messages on covers of the US edition of Vogue. Using diachronic content analysis, interviews with Japanese magazine professionals and readers, and eye-tracking analysis, it investigates how such messages are represented and received. The findings suggest that social messages are present on Vogue covers, that Japanese magazine professionals and readers do not always interpret them in the same way, and that prior knowledge may shape visual attention. Vogue covers thus invite multiple interpretations across different readers and social contexts.
