This study is to investigate the characteristics of kitchen remodeling for wheelchair users in Korea and to present ideas for kitchen design through analyzing the effects of remodeling and evaluating the application degree of universal design principle. For case studies, we visited 20 remodeled kitchens in Korea, interviewing and observing wheelchair users, measuring and taking pictures of remodeled kitchens. The following are major findings resulting from this study: (1) Remodeled kitchens in Korea are classified into 3 types. Type 1 is the kitchen where knee space is provided below sink. Type 2 is the one where the kitchen counter is much lowered for a wheelchair user to do kitchen work sitting on the kitchen floor. Type 3 is the kitchen where the counter is slightly lowered without a knee space in consideration of appearance and the reduction of storage space etc. (2) Evaluation by universal design criteria showed Type A was higher than Type B and Type C in principle one (supportive design), two (adaptable design), and three (accessible design). (3) To carry hot food, a table being attached to a wheelchair can be considered.
