Abstract

This study aims at clarifying how the relationship between body-holding actions in pedestrian space that accommodate the actions are conceptualized by users and urban planners. A questionnaire to the revealed that for the purpose of resting in the outdoor space, it is not only the products based on stereotyped ideas such as benches but something that enables to hold body, spatial works and ambient surroundings are greatly involved. Now, such environment is named "body-holding environment". The key words used in the descriptions of examples of pedestrian space appeared in the media were analyzed. The result tells that while the planners tried to put ideas and thoughts in regard to the configuration claiming that they would elicit different actions of the users, specific images of the user's actual action were rarely projected.
