Abstract
The tatami is one of the major tools in the interior construction of building structures in Japan; it is used as the unit of measurement for determining the size of the interior space. In addition, the tatami symbolizes the lifestyle and unique features of the Yamato people. Taiwan's knowledge of tatami came about during the Japanese Occupation when the Japanese brought it with them to the country; it has since slowly been integrated into the Taiwanese way of life. The study is using the building of historical information as foundation to conduct survey and research into Taiwan's tatami industry and culture. It also uses the field research technique of folklore and the cross-verification of related literature as the main research method. The purpose for this study is to build historical data on the development of tatami industry, as well as to understand how foreign culture develops in Taiwan, providing reference for future design localization.
