The purpose of this study is to come up with a framework for the identification of some factors in the support of the mentlly confused elderly, especially the support given throug networks of family members and relatives. It has already been learned that while the quality of the support given to the mentally confused elderly is no less than that for the elderly in general, the quantity of support for the mentally confused elderly is larger. (This was learned through a case study involving in-depth face-to-face interviews with the caregivers for 22 mentally confused eldery who use the respite care services for the mentally confused elderly at Tokyo Metropolitan.) Therefore, an analytic framework having to do with the elderly in general cannot be sufficient. Thus, it will be necessary to develop an analytic framework for the mentally confused elderly. The framework will have two parts, one relating to the mentally confused elderly, the other relating to the networks of family members and relatives. The factors on the side of the elderly are the physical condition, the mental condition and the financial condition of the elderly. These factors have to do with the social independence of the elderly. The factors on the side of the networks of family members and relatives include, once again, physical, mental and financial conditions, and, in addition, support role acceptance, the relationship with the elderly, recognition of the condition of the mentally confused elderly, access to information concerning social supprt systems.
