Ratoon cropping is a rice-cropping system in which the tillers produced from stubble of the first-season crop is harvested as the second-season crop. This system has been practiced in some areas of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, but not in Bali. This study aims to determine the reasons for the non-implementation of ratoon cropping in Bali and to investigate the possibility of its adoption in common practice. Interviews were conducted with 12 rice farmers in three rice-growing regions of Bali, namely Tabanan, Badung, and Gianyar. In addition, the Bali Provincial Department of Agriculture (DINAS) provided information on rice cultivation and ratoon cropping in Bali. The findings show that few farmers in Bali were aware of regenerative ratoon cropping. Many of the farmers felt that it was difficult to implement because of water shortages, low yields, and other issues. However, many of the farmers expressed interest in ratoon cropping methods if these problems could be resolved. DINAS also revealed interest in promoting ratoon cropping. Therefore, expanding ratoon cropping in Bali may be made possible from areas with less water shortage if farmers are accurately informed of the appropriate cultivation management for ratoon cropping.
