RNA phages had been separated by several criteria into 3 groups. A comparison was made of 15 RNA phage strains for their inactivation by pH and heat. Although different strains in a same group differ more or less in sensitivity for pH and heat, much more difference was observed between different groups. RNA phages which belonged to group III were most sensitive and phages of group II were more sensitive as compared to those of group I. These results indicate that the grouping based on these properties is in good agreement with that based on serological properties.
In addition to this, Qβ phages in a same sample were found to be heterogeneous in sensitivity for pH and heat.
