Abstract

Due to the increasing of sewage treatment quantity and enhancement of environmental awareness, China faces serious problems of sludge management. This study was a report by local data collection interviewed to the person in charge of sewage sludge disposal in Beijing City in December, 2005.Land application is the most suitable disposal method, because China is a developing country and a large agricultural country. Composting method will be most widely used Beijing adopts a centralized system to stabilize 78% of her sludge in three rural Stabilization Centers for 16 Wastewater treatment plants. Aerated composting technique will be used. There are many different treatment and disposal methods for sludge being used around China today. The market demand, quality of sludge product, and treatment cost are favourable to potential reuse. Based on further public environmental education, on a relevant development of standards for sludge quality, and on guarantee to safety reuse, more and more planned sustainable sludge management projects would be expected in China.
