The effect of the wall thickness of the fibers on papermaking properties of pulps was investigated. The two-color staining technique proposed by Simons and Jayme, available for the study of the effect of beating, was used to observe the changes within the cell walls during the beating process and for the microscopic investigation of fibrillation, the metal-shadowed specimen was observed in vertically reflected light in order to improve the intensity of the image.
By the above mentioned methods, the differences of the state of beating were examined with bleached pine (Pinus densiflora) kraft pulp, bleached beech kraft pulp and bleached white birch kraft pulp. The results were obtained that in bleached beech kraft pulp the reduction in the rigidity of the fiber walls by the loosening of the textures of the inner cell walls was least developed and in addition, the cell walls were disintegrated into more tightly arranged and more broad fibril bundles. Therefore it is pointed out that these phenomena would be caused by the wall thickness of beech wood fiber, resulting in considerably low strength properties.
