Reed had been known as a potential material for pulp manufacture in Vietnam by a large storage at Mekong Delta.
Chips obtained from reed stalk were digested in nitric acid and extracted with ammonium hydroxide (detailed in Table 2). As a reference, the conventional kraf t and mono-sulfite pulpings were carried out.
The results can be summarized as follows :
(1) The nitric acid pulps have lower pulp yield, dark color and lower drainage than mono-sulfite pulp, but can remove all of white membranuous material in the inner wall of reed stalk cave. Result of nitric acid pulp at the same permanganate number with kraft pulp indicated higher pulp yield but lower DP and brightness value.
(2) As for nitric acid pulps, the lower yield pulp had a higher sheet density, but lower strength properties.
(3) Comparing at the same sheet density, the nitric acid pulp showed the similar strength properties as the kraft pulp ; but at the higher sheet density, the strengths of the nitric acid pulp were lower than those of kraf t pulp. Mono-sulfite pulp was relatively weeker than the other two pulps.
(4) The amounts of cyanic acid evolved in process, suspended solid, chemical oxygen demand, reducing sugars, organic acids and nitrohumic acids of spent liquors were determined also.
