A recent progress of biochemical pulping of bast fibers, i. e., pectocellulosic materials, including the back grounds related to pulping, e. g., retting, microorganisms producing pectinolytic enzymes etc., was critically reviewed. It covered biochemical pulping of woods, i. e., lignocellulosic materials, phenomena of microbial degradation of pectic substances in woods such as wetwoods, macerating enzymes, screening methods for useful microorganisms producing pectinolytic enzymes and characteristics of the enzymatic pulp sheets. In screening of effective microorganisms, the author's attention was directed to phytopathogenic bacteria towards mulberry and other fiber crops, especially genus Erwinia and alkalophilic bacteria.
It was also proposed that the universally prevalent term “biological pulping” should be revised to “biochemical pulping” from the viewpoint of pulping classification based on defibration energy used in pulping.
