A large portion of papermaking alum used in mills was found to be retained in the paper. But it was indicated for some mills to use too much alum.
It was shown by comparison of nitrogen content of papers with the dissolved nitrogen in white waters that the total retention of polymer additives seemed to be 6070%. A large amount of polymer additives was found to be accumulated in papers through the recycling of waste papers. The retention of polymers varied widely from one mill to another. Thus there is still a great room for improvement. This fact should be rather emphasized in neutral or alkaline papermaking system.
The relationship between the dissolved inorganic concentration (I : ppm) and the conductivity (C : mS/cm) was shown as follows : I=700 (C-0.05) (0.05 is attributable to organic acids).
The turbidity of centrifuged supernatant of white waters decreased with decreasing zeta potential and the highest degree of clarification was obtained at a zeta potential of -2 to +3 mV.
