The trend in paper making is to reduce fresh water consumption, use more recycled fiber in the furnish, maintain the pH of the papermachine at neutral. These changes tend to increase slime deposits.
Slime deposits are containing highly diverse microflora along with fibers, fines, fillers and additives. Biocides are generally used to control slime deposition and bromine-compounds are the standard chemicals. In addition, a new monitoring tool, Slime Monitor, is developed to establish a suitable slime control program in paper mills. It allows on-line, real-time measurement of slime deposition and ensures that the minimum possible amount of biocide is used to the greatest possible effect.
