The Decomposition of various selenium-containing amino acids by S-alkylcysteine α, β-lyases, which were purified from Pseudomonas putida and Bacillus sp., was examined. The enzymes catalyzed the α, β-elimination of Se-methyl-l-selenocysteine and l-selenodjenkolate. The enzymes catalyzed also the β-replacement reaction of the selenomethyl group of Se-methyl-l-selenocysteine with various thiols to yield the corresponding S-substituted cysteines. When selenodjenkolate was decomposed by the Ps. putida enzyme an insoluble precipitate was formed in the reaction mixture. The formation of insoluble precipitate was not observed when monoiodoacetic acid was added to the reaction mixture.
