Abstract
This study aims to investigate the process of establishing urban dwellings in modem era and the present way of life inside those housings focusing on Hanoi, Vietnam. Our perspective is to overcome the patterned antagonism between The Modern metropolis and Traditional Shop houses and to elucidate the process of establishing dwelling styles in particular region watching shop houses as kinetic form. We made an analysis on the transformation of urban dwellings under the colonialism observing the inflection of urban fabrics resulting from the changes in Vietnamese urban life. Attending to the possibility of the creation of Newly Vietnamese quarter effected from two synchronized dimensions, brewing from urban life in shop houses and introduction of French modem lives, we analyzed the relation between urban dwellings and urban fabrics. We made investigations through materials such as maps or surveys of dwellings. We identified the characteristics of Hanoi's shop houses as these; The present form of Hanoi's shop house is established after opening port in 1874. The regular styled shop house with a rectangular lot was currently created and in the course of urban development. Demanded dwelling styles were invented in the interchange of factors between metropolis and indigenous. We further noticed that after fixation of dwelling styles due to the Revolution, urban dwellings were still continuing to catch up with the times, which almost comes to those limits. Reconfirming the capriciousness of the claim to urban dwellings leads to grasp the current status of the city.
