Abstract
The relation between ownership, uses and management of courtyards in courtyard style settlement of Nepal are analyzed to verify the management system of common space in a modern age. As a result, following discoveries are made. 1) Owning, using and managing a common space by the same actor is not always a rational management system. 2) The the management system, having various management actors and their different level of managerial activities according to the uses of courtyards, is more benefi cial to accommodate with unexpected problems compared to the management system where only a specifi c actor exists for management activities.
