Abstract
Lymphocyte blastformation of non-adherent lymphocytes was investigated under and after hemodialysis in 15 healthy dogs. Groups examined were as follows; group I underwent hemodialysis (n=6) ; group II received extracorporeal circulation by blood line only without dialyzer (n=6) ; and group III was maintained anesthesia without extracorporeal circulation (n=3) . The number of leucocytes decreased during the first phase of extracorporeal circulation, then tended to increase after 60 min. The lymphocyte blastformation in group I showed a transient decrease 60 min after the initiation of extracorporeal circulation. However, lymphocyte blastformation after extracorporeal circulation did not differ between groups I and II for 7 days, in spite of a transient suppression.
These results suggest that non-specific immunosuppression might occur during hemo-dialysis and that the suppression of lymphocyte blastformation might continue even a few days after hemodialvsis.
