Highly pathogenic avian influenza(H5N1)virus, which surfaced in Hong Kong in 1997 and 2001 became widespread in Asia between 2003 and 2005. After causing catastrophic pandemics in the region, it is still endemic in several countries due mainly to improper use of vaccines of unknown quality. This period could be considered as the first pandemic of H5N1 in Asia.
The second pandemic started in Qinghai Lake in China in 2005, the H5N1 virus which had acquired high pathogenecity in wild waterfowl, spread to the countries in The Central Asia, the Near East and Europe by March 2006. Migratory waterfowl played the major role in spreading the virus.
As the virus is still active in Qinghai region, the virus may spread to the countries in the Far East as well as in North America via Alaska. It is considered very important to strengthen the surveillance program for the virus as they did in the EU member countries. The use of vaccines, which meet the OIE standards, need to be considered in case of a disease emergency. The most effective and economical vaccination programs should be developed before H5N1 virus appears again in the Far East.
