The characteristics and ability to exterminate adult houseflies (Musca domestica) and stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) of two chemicals and three materials were compared. To determine the risk of viral disease spread by adult flies, the possibility of the mechanical transmission of parapoxvirus (PPV) by houseflies was considered and the bovine leukemia virus (BLV) positivity rate of stable flies was examined. It was found that the two chemicals and three materials were effective in capturing flies, however, they were only effective for either houseflies or stable flies. PPV DNA was detected in both the direct wash solution of the body surface of houseflies and the indirect wash solution of flies (including fly body surface attachments and fly feces), suggesting the possible mechanical transmission of PPV by houseflies. Moreover, BLV DNA was detected on stable flies from the farms where BLV-infected cattle were present. These results suggest that the appropriate use/maintenance of chemicals and materials for each target fly or the combined use of chemicals and materials is necessary to prevent the spread of viral diseases in cattle barns.
