Rectal massage was applied to 40 dairy cows to remove retained after-birth from them.
1. This treatment was sanitary and effective to remove the fetal membranes in a short period of time. No disturbance occurred after this treatment.
2. Rectal massage was successful in removing the fetal membranes completely from 57.5 per cent of the 40 cows and in eliminating part of these membranes from 22.5 per cent. In the remaining 20 per cent of the cows, manual detachment was applied concurrently with rectal massage, since the fetal membranes were thin and the fusion of the placenta was strong ; the rectal massage was effective to cause the contraction of the uterus and make the manual detachment easy.
3. Good results could be expected from rectal massage when it was applied to removal of retained after-birth from a cow involved in abortion and artificial expulsion of a mummified fetus.
4. It was desirable to apply rectal massage to removal of retained after-birth on the 4th day after parturition or more than a few days after abortion.
