Various factors are presumed for the outbreak of scours among suckling piglets. The results of status quo surveys in Chiba Prefecture indicated the prevalence of scours caused by colibacilli among piglets not older than 3 weeks and a relatively high fataluty rate of this type of porcine scours, which is called colibacillosis in this paper.
1. Repeated outbreaks of colibacillosis have been observed on the same hog farms.
2. There were two forms, precocious and tardy, in colibacillosis among newborn piglets. The occurrence of the tardy form was assumed to be closely related to the rise and fall of antibody contained in the colostrum.
3. Colibacillosis could be treated successfully to some extent at its early stage. Prophylactic measures should be taken to check the damage of this infection to the largest possible extent.
4. There may be a correlation between the occurrence of colibacillosis among piglets around the time of weaning and the composition of the artificial milk given to them.
