Abstract
A patho-epizootiologic survey on atrophic rhinitis (AR) in swine was carried out at the Sagamihara Slaughterhouse in order to reveal the rate of occurrence of the disease in Kanagawa Prefecture during 1968-1969.
Of 41, 692 pigs inspected, 438 were clinically diagnosed as AR from a severe facial lesion and clinical signs. Of 184 pigs selected from a large number of pigs with no facial lesions, 52 were diagnosed as AR anatomically.
These diseased animals showed atrophy of the nasal turbinates and facial bones, inflammation of the nasal mucosa, inflammatory exudation in the nasal cavity, and other clinical signs. Most of them remained of poor body weight, showing retarded growth.
