Escherichia colicould be isolated at the rate of 78.9% from the mesenteric lymph node in 38 calves about one week old, but not in 9 calves 1-5 months old. The isolates could be typed at the rate of 51.6-72.3% by employing the known O-group antisera. The isolates from the small and large intestine of calves 1-5 months old could be serotyped at the rate of 80 and 15.8%, respectively.
Eighteen of the known O-group serotypes were detected in the isolates from the mesenteric lymph nodes. The frequent incidence of the same serotypes could be observed in the isolates from the intestine of calves whose mesenteric lymph nodes were positive forE. coli.Only 5 to 9 of the O-9roup serotupes forE. coli.Only 5 to 9 of the O-group serotypes were detected in the isolates from calves whose mesenteric lymph nodes were negative forE. coli.
