From February, 1974, to September, 1975, a survey was conducted on the incidence of bovine mastitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) in Chiba Prefecture. As a result, this mastitis was seen in 9.5% of 137 cows and 8.5% of 224 udders examined. PA serotypes 1, 7, 8, 10, 12, and 13 were isolated from milk samples collected from these affected udders.
The sera of 5 cows with clinical mastitis from which PA was isolated abundantly in a pure state showed the highest titer, of 1: 160 in the OEP-HA test. PA isolated from milk affected with bovine mastitis presented moderate sensitivity to polymyxin B, colistin, dihydrostreptomycin, and sulbenicillin. Sulbenicillin seemed to be a promissing remedy for this type of mastitis.
