Abstract
Twenty-two dogs (3 males and 19 females) with transmissible venereal sarcoma were observed hematologically and histologically. Grossly, the tumor was of “diffuse type” in 10 cases and of “localized typet” in 12 cases. That type was shown in quite young dogs and this type in quite old dogs. The tumor occurred to the external genitalia of both sexes and varied in size from 2×2×2cm to 15×17×6cm. No metastasis was observed. The diffuse type exhibited an increase in leukocytes and neutrophils.
Histological examination revealed that the tumor was canine transmissible venereal sarcoma. The mean rate of mitosis in tumor cells of diffuse and localized type was 0.375% and 0.738%, respectively. In the diffuse type, tumor cells showed variability in size, diffuse arrangement, and necrosis. Remarkable features were an increase in stroma, polynucleocyte infiltration on the surface of the tumor mass, and an hemorrhagic tendency and cellular infiltration in connective tissue surrounding the tumor. In the localized type, an active vascular reproduction. in connective tissue surroundingthe tumor was remarkable.
