Abstract

Severe diarrhea broke out among calves on 4 different rearing farms. Salmonella organisms were isolated from it at a high frequency. Finally, 14.3-35.2% of calves reared on these farms died or were discarded. Diarrhea occurred mostly to newly introduced calves 7 to 30 days after arrival at the farms. Salmonella organisms were isolated in an almost pure culture from lung, liver and spleen of dead calves. All of them belonged to S. naestved (1, 9, 12: g, p, s:-).
