Abstract

An intra-articular injection of 2.5-10.0ml of 1% SPH was evaluated in dairy Cattle with acute arthritis (18 cases) or chronic osteoarthritis (8 cases).
Of the former cases, 16 (88.8%) revealed a complete disappearance or improvement of lameness and no recrudescence. All the latter cases and one case (5.6%) of acute arthritis exhibited an improvement of lameness, but returned to the pretreatment condition 2weeks later. One case (5.6%) of acute arthritis showed no improvement.
In synovial fluid analysis, color, turbidity, mucin content, consistency, concentration of protein and hyaluronic acid were restored to normal after SPH injection. No side effects were observed.
