Abstract

An outbreak of fibrinous pleuropneumonia was observed on a farm in Nagasaki Prefecture from September to October, 1982.
Sudden death occurred mainly in four-month-old fattening pigs. Autopsy on two dead pigs revealed hepatization in all the lung, fibrination in the pleura, and deposition of fluid in the thoracic cavity. Histologically, fibrinous pleuropneumomia was demonstrated.Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae, which belongs to serotype 5, was isolated from the lung and heart. Of 57 strains isolated in Nagasaki Prefecture from 1982 to 1985, six belonged to serotype 5 and the others to serotype 2.
