Abstract
The incidence of prolonged retention of deciduous canine and the resulting malocclusion of permanent c anine were investigated in 1, 120 dogs. Seventy-seven (6.9%) cases had prolonged retention of deciduous c anine with the highest incidence (13.8%) in small dogs and higher incidence in younger ones. The incidence was greater in Pomeranian, Yorkshire terrier and Maltese breeds. There was no significant difference between males and females. The incidence was higher in the maxilla than the mandibula. Displaced permanent canine and malocclusion due to the prolonged retention of deciduous canine were seen in 35 (51.5%) of 68 cases showing no developmental anomaly in the jaw length.
