Abstract
Ultrasonography and gross findings of the teats from 25 lactating cows and those from 24 mammas from culled cows were compared by the water bath dipping method. The normal teats showed hyperechogenic images of the epidermal wall, intima and rosette of Furstenberg, while the muscle layer was hypoechogenic and the teat sinus and canal appeared anechogenic. In heifes, the teat sinus appeared as a thin anechogenic area, and the teat intima was unclear in dry cows. Abnormal ultrasonographic fiindings were obtained in cases of the obstruction of teat sinus, intima hypertrophy, abscesses and polypes, which were morphologically confirmed. In lactating cows, some abnormal teats were detected by ultrasonography as diverticulum, stenosis and malformation.
