Abstract

Based on estrous signs and rectal palpation findings, 78 dairy cows having ovarian cysts were divided into three groups, and each group was specifically treated and monitored for the reproductive performance. Thirtynine cows exhibiting normal estrous signs and having cystic and normal follices (Group A) were inseminated during the first examination, while 16 cows with cystic follicles along with corpora lutea (Group B) were injected with dinoprost (25 mg, i. m.) during the first examination and then inseminated at the first sign of estrus. Twenty-three cows with only cystic follicles (Group C) were injected with dinoprost 14 days after treating with fertirelin acetate (200μg, i. m.) during the first examination, and they were inseminated following the estrus. The time periods (means±SD) from the first examination to insemination for Groups A, B and C were 0, 9.3±14.2 and 20.6±21.3 days, respectively, and those from the first examination to conception were 32.4±43.7, 42.7±45.5 and 65.2±50.8 days, respectively. The conception rates following the first insemination in Groups A, B and C were, 43.6, 43.8 and 34.8%, respectively, and the number of inseminations required to conceive were 1.9±1.1, 1.9±1.1 and 2.1±1.4, respectively.
