Based on estrous signs and rectal palpation findings, 78 dairy cows having ovarian cysts were divided into three groups, and each group was specifically treated and monitored for the reproductive performance. Thirtynine cows exhibiting normal estrous signs and having cystic and normal follices (Group A) were inseminated during the first examination, while 16 cows with cystic follicles along with corpora lutea (Group B) were injected with dinoprost (25 mg, i. m.) during the first examination and then inseminated at the first sign of estrus. Twenty-three cows with only cystic follicles (Group C) were injected with dinoprost 14 days after treating with fertirelin acetate (200μg, i. m.) during the first examination, and they were inseminated following the estrus. The time periods (means±SD) from the first examination to insemination for Groups A, B and C were 0, 9.3±14.2 and 20.6±21.3 days, respectively, and those from the first examination to conception were 32.4±43.7, 42.7±45.5 and 65.2±50.8 days, respectively. The conception rates following the first insemination in Groups A, B and C were, 43.6, 43.8 and 34.8%, respectively, and the number of inseminations required to conceive were 1.9±1.1, 1.9±1.1 and 2.1±1.4, respectively.

Of 1, 790 carcasses of Japanese black beef cattle marketed from October 1994 to July 1996, 18.5% were shown to have fat necrosis. The incidence was significantly (p<0.005) higher in cows (20.4%) than in steers (14.8%). No difference in the incidence was found among 17 bulls used for the breeding, but difference in the incidence was significant (p<0.005) among five unbred bull strains: Shigekane (21.8%), Tajiri (21.1%), Kedaka (8.6%), Okushiro (8.0%) and Fujiyoshi (0%). Difference in the incidence of fat necrosis was also found (p<0.01) among various combinations of cross-bred steers and cows. The results suggested that the bull strain might affect the incindence of fat necerosis in Japanese black beef cattle.

A canine coronavirus (CCV) isolate, strain 5821, from the lung of a dog with diarrhea and respiratory disorders, was inoculated into puppies by various routes. In most cases the virus was recovered from the lymph nodes adjacent to the inoculation sites without showing diarrhea and shedding virus in feces. A 3-day-old puppy developed respiratory signs and died after oronasal inoculation, and CCV was recovered from many organs including the respiratory tract. The virus was recovered from the lungs of many cases of 2-month-old puppies after intratracheal inoculation, showing norespiratory signs

A 4-year-old castrated male mongrel cat with slight roaring and weakness, had a hard nodule on the cervical skin. The skin nodule biopsy revealed granuloma containing round organisms with a capsule, and Cryptococcus neoformans was detected by culture. The blood was positive for C. neoformans antigen. After peroral treatment with itoraconazole for 4 months, the cutaneous nodule disappeared and the circulating antigen became negative with resolution of the symptoms.

One-year-old male beagle dog with weakness, anorexia and vomiting during one week, was radiographically suspected to have intestinal perforation and obstruction due to a foreign body, and exploratory laparotomy disclosed perforation of the small intestine by a sewing needle and accordion-like intestinal pleating due to the obstructive tangled thread. Since the involved intestine was markedly degenerated and necrotized, the affected part of the intestine about 1 m in length was resected. After operation the animal did not exhibit short gut syndrome such as sustained diarrhea and malnutrition, and prognosis was satisfactory.

During a period of April 1996 to March 1997, HACCP system was implemented in bovine slaughtering at a meat plant. Based on a 12 step procedure, the HACCP plan was made after a hazards analysis, then the critical limits referring to the control of CCP's were continually monitored, and the improved handling procedures dry system dressing and sterilizers were gradually introduced, resulting in that total viable bacterial counts of bovine carcasses were maintained at a level of 10-2/cm2.
