Abstract
A field trial was conducted to investigate the metaphysic efficacy of toltrazuril against coccidiosis in sucklingpiglets caused by Isospora suis infection on three pig farms in 2004. In this trial, 153 suckling piglets (0-5 daysold) from 15 litters were used. Piglets were divided into test and control group at random in each litter. Tothe test group, 20mg/kg of toltrazuril was applied orally once on the first day of trial. Two weeks after dosing, the development of coccidiosis was not observed in any of the test group. In contrast, coccidiosis developedin 67.7% of the piglets in the control group in the same period, with a statistical difference (P<0.05) evidentbetween the groups. In the appearances of abnormal feces, the results of test group (27.1%) were significantlylower than those of the control group (82.4%). Also, the average DWG in the second week in the test group (229.87±63.45g) was significantly better (P<0.05) than in the control group (195.16±7.02g). Based on theresults, it may be concluded that a single oral application of toltrazuril (20mg/kg) showed excellent metaphylaxicefficacy against coccidiosis in suckling piglets caused by I. suis infection, two weeks after dosing.
