A field trial was conducted to investigate the metaphysic efficacy of toltrazuril against coccidiosis in sucklingpiglets caused by Isospora suis infection on three pig farms in 2004. In this trial, 153 suckling piglets (0-5 daysold) from 15 litters were used. Piglets were divided into test and control group at random in each litter. Tothe test group, 20mg/kg of toltrazuril was applied orally once on the first day of trial. Two weeks after dosing, the development of coccidiosis was not observed in any of the test group. In contrast, coccidiosis developedin 67.7% of the piglets in the control group in the same period, with a statistical difference (P<0.05) evidentbetween the groups. In the appearances of abnormal feces, the results of test group (27.1%) were significantlylower than those of the control group (82.4%). Also, the average DWG in the second week in the test group (229.87±63.45g) was significantly better (P<0.05) than in the control group (195.16±7.02g). Based on theresults, it may be concluded that a single oral application of toltrazuril (20mg/kg) showed excellent metaphylaxicefficacy against coccidiosis in suckling piglets caused by I. suis infection, two weeks after dosing.

This study was conducted to determine the concentrations of cytokines, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-1 receptorantagonist (ra), IL-6, interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α in serum and whey from clinicallyhealthy cows and cows with peracute coliform mastitis, and to evaluate the association of increased cytokinelevels in mastitic cows with their clinical findings. The concentrations of IL-1β, IL-6, and IFN-γ in serumand whey from E. coli mastitic cows at the onset of mastitis were apparently increased, compared with thoseof healthy cows. Increased levels of cytokine concentrations in whey were reduced during the mastitis recoveryprocess of. Correlations were found between increased levels of IL-6 in serum and whey and IFN-γ inwhey and their characteristic findings in E. coli mastitic cows at the day of diagnosis. These findings suggestthat increased levels of cytokine concentrations in dairy cows with E. coli mastitis may be associated with thepathogenesis and their characteristic findings.

The efficacy of febantel combination drug treatment was evaluated in clinical cases of dogs infected withStrongyloides sp. A single oral dose of febantel at 15 mg/kg of body weight was only 50.0%(2/4) effective ineradicating first-stage larvae of Strongyloides sp. in the feces.A second administration of the same dose failedto improve in the efficacy. In contrast, oral administration of febantel at a dose of 15 mg/kg of body weightonce daily for three connective days was 63.6%(7/11) effective against Strongyloides sp. infection in dogs.Asecond administration of the same dose in non-effective cases for three connective days was 50%(2/4) effective, giving a total efficacy of this protocol of 81.8%(9/11).

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with severe pulmonary hypertension was diagnosed in three young dogs.Cardiac catheterization and echocardiography revealed that all cases were barely left-to-right shunting PDA, and surgical ligation of the ductus arteriosus was consequently performed in a modified Jackson or directmethod.Post-operative recovery was uneventful in all cases, and all dogs have been in good condition withoutmedication required in the four years since the surgery. These successful cases suggest that PDA with severepulmonary hypertension can be treated with a surgical procedure when given a strict evaluation of both aorticand pulmonic arterial pressure through cardiac catheterization.

A three-year-old, female, miniature Dachshund was presented with a history of weight loss.Since radiologicaland ultrasonographical examinations led to a presumptive diagnosis of unilateral renal neoplasia, unilateralnephrectomy was performed.Histopathologic examination of the resected renal mass confirmed the diagnosisof renal cell carcinoma. The dog was treated with piroxicam postoperatively, and survived for twenty seven months.

A seven-year-old female Labrador retriever was presented with lameness and pain of the left hind limb.Physicalexamination, serum biochemistry profiles, radiographs, and histological examination of a bone biopsy indicatedan epithelial tumor in the left distal femur and liver cancer. However, the relationship between the boneand hepatic lesions was not confirmed. The dog died before palliative therapy could be employed.Histopathologicalexamination following necropsy revealed hepatocellur carcinoma with bone metastasis. This report documenteda rare case of hepatocellular carcinoma with long bone metastasis.

As part of our basic research into Helicobacter pylori infections, the bacterium was experimentally inoculatedinto 12 specific-pathogen-free (SPF) cats. After the inoculation, we confirmed the presence of the bacteriumin nine of the 12 cats (75.0%) by measuring total viable counts in the gastric mucosa, and by immunohistochemicalassays. Histopathological examinations revealed swelling, degeneration, and exfoliation of mucosalepithelial cells in the pyloric region and duodenums of six cats. Severe lymphocytic infiltration and moderatemacrophage and neutrophil infiltration in the lamina propria were also confirmed in these cats. This experimentshowed that H. felis can infect the gastric mucosa and duodenums of cats and cause inflammation similarto that observed in humans infected with H. pylori. Based on these results, we suggest that cats infectedwith H. felis could be used as an infection model for humans.
