Abstract
Following intracerebral or intranasal inoculation with sialodacryoadenitis(SDA) virus, 930-10 strain, 2-day-old ddY mice developed central nervous system symptoms. The course of disease was peracute and pathological changes were exclusively seen in the brain, and they were localized symmetrically in the limited area of the cerebral cortex irrespective of route of inoculation. The lesions were characterized by degeneration of neurons without inflammatory changes. Multiplication of virions showing characteristics of coronavirus was detected in the degenerated neurons of the cerebrum. The virus existed also in the lungs of mice after intranasal inoculation. Virus specific immunofluorescence was observed in the areas of nerve cell layer of Stratum pyramidale subiculi and Cortex cerebri, area entorhinalis of the cerebrum.
