Abstract

A ring-structured graphical search interface was proposed to support retrieval from ambiguous information needs. This interface enables users to input information needs without texts, create dynamic hierarchies by combining attributes and continue to search by evaluating retrieved results. In this paper, this proposed interface was introduced and its effects of applying botanical data retrieval and application search were discussed. The results of the usability tests showed that novice users could find more satisfied images, users could more easily find plant names by simply rotating the search rings, users could more easily analyze the information by quickly recognizing the features of retrieved plants and users could find unexpected application or make a new decision on downloading applications by preparing intuitive attributes such as color and atmosphere.
