The flow structure in the turbulent wake behind a thin symmetrical airfoil was observed by means of a novel smoke wire technique. The flow visualization conditioned by the detection of low-speed lump in the turbulent boundary layer near the trailing edge reveals that the structure in the developing region of wake flow is affected by the coherent structures in the turbulent boundary layer and that the flow field contains the large-scale motions with roller-like structure at the outer region of the wake and the smaller-scale vortical motions near the wake center.
