A method for determination of flow direction in a pathline picture has been developed The processing system consists of TV camera and parsonal computer with an image acquisition board. This algorithm uses on a property of fluids that there is little irregulei fluctuation of the flow direction in a small region. Flow directions are determined with inclination of pathlines and velocity vector in addition to information in the region where the velocities are already determined.
The algorithm is applied to two types of two-dimensional pathline pictures, one is the flow past a flat plate normal to itself and the other is the flow in a rectangular cavity The results show that the present method is useful to analyze such pathline pictures.
