Vibrational motions of surface adsorbates are fundamental degrees of freedom that govern various surface dynamics including catalytic processes and thermal conduction. It is vital to understand their excitation and relaxation dynamics in time domain. We have been working on time-domain observation of vibrational dynamics of surface adsorbates by using optical nonlinear spectroscopy with ultrashort laser pulses. In this talk, our recent research on vibrational dynamics of carbon monoxide and alkali atoms on metal surfaces will be demonstrated.
