Warm and humid environmental condition, like in Japan, promotes fungal growth. Under such conditions, a fungal body enlarges its size by elongation and branching of structures called mycelia consisting of multiple cells arranged in lines. Mycelia are often strongly attached to surfaces, that it is difficult to remove fungi once they grow. For plant pathogenic fungi, surface attachment is important for successful infection of plants. Our studies on plant pathogenic fungi have indicated that the fungal recognition of surface cues controls the fungal attachment. Based on this finding, we further generated anti-fungal surfaces by chemically modification.
