Abstract

In our previous study, we proposed novel diffusion model for metal ion in ionic liquid, in which the metal ions diffused by the hopping-like mechanism and the apparent diffusion coefficient increased with increasing of the concentration of 'holes' (vacancies formed between IL molecules) acting as hopping sites. In this study, we investigated the effect of the polar/non-polar domain on the diffusion behavior of Ag+ ion in ionic liquid solution based on our original diffusion model. We found that hopping diffusion was enhanced by the addition of large amount of Li+ ion (500 mM). This is due to that part of Ag+ ions were driven out of the polar domain, and moved to the non-polar domain where the activation energy of hopping diffusion was relatively small.
