Abstract

Effect of groove thickness on joining phenomena and tensile strength of medium carbon steel joint by autocompleting friction welding method was investigated. The ratio of circumferential shear fracture was proposed, which was calculated by a transfer torque of insert piece with dependence of a thickness and the initial torque with dependence on the friction welding condition. When the value of that ratio was larger than 1, the insert piece had produced the circumferential shear fracture, and the friction welding had automatically finished. The joint had the tensile strength as the base metal.
