Coastal protection facilities were heavily damaged by tsunami more than the design tsunami in the 2011 off the Pacific Coast of Tohoku Earthquake. This paper describes the characteristics of the tsunami overflow exceeding seawall type of coastal structures and the effect on scour through numerical analysis. Profiles of tsunami overflow and wave forces acting to the seawalls and to ground surface behind them are examined to understand the mechanism of failure.
