New business development approaches include an effectual and a causal approaches. An effectual approach was theorized as decision-making under unpredictable circumstances by Saras D. Sarasvathy. The effectual approach, against the opportunity-finding approach, is positioned as one of the effective approaches to create the future (product, firm, market) by starting with existing means (who you are, what you know and who you know) and forming partnerships with people/organizations and interracting with other people. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the successes and challenges for the effectual approach-based business development by referring to the case of HORIBA’s business development.
