In commemoration of the 30 years Anniversary of the Oceanographical Society of Japan founded in January of 1941, we have congratulated it already on the Beer Party Evening of October 5, 1971 at Hakodate Citizen Hall, Hokkaido on the occasion of the Annual Autumnal Meeting of our Society and opened a Memorial Popular Lectures on the next day at the same Hall by some of the members. The present issue may provide the perspective advance of our oceanographical society particularly in the last ten years (1961-71) and the materials of our future prospectus with best wishes.(Tables in Appendices illustrate some extracted matters of our activity.)
During the last decade our society has developed to the doubled size for the number of members (now beyond 1, 000 including 90 in foreign countries) and for the amount of pages of the Journal.
We are proud of the International Oceanographic Assembly, “The Ocean World, ” held in September 13-25, 1970 at Tokyo (IAPSO XV, IABO II, CMG IV, SCOR X) cosponsored by the Science Council of Japan and our society. The Proceedings of the Assembly (562 pages) was already published and distributed at the end of 1971. In this opportunity it is heartily appreciated to the efforts paid by those contributors who devoted to the above advance of our society and to the success of all meetings concerned.
An oriental wiseman said, “Coming at age 30 he stands on his feet.” After passing through troublesome postwar times our society arrived at the rather financially stabilized situation and may develop in more active state in near future. It is hoped cordially sincere cooperation of all our members for the Society in future.
